गाँव का एक बूढ़ा चौधरी लकड़ियों से भरी गाड़ी लेकर करीब के नगर में बेचने के लिए आया। चौधरी की गाड़ी को नज़र भरकर देखने के बाद एक सेठ ने पूछा , ““ बाबा , गाड़ी का क्या लेगा ?” चौधरी ने कहा , “ एक ही दाम बता दूँ ? पूरे पाँच रुपए लूँगा। कमी - बेशी मत करना। " सेठ ने कहा , “ बाबा , तूने कहा है तो गाड़ी के पूरे पाँच ही दूँगा। चल , जल्दी कर ! मेरी हवेली तक तो चल। '' सेठ के साथ चौधरी उसकी हवेली गया। वहाँ पहुँचकर पहले गाड़ी में जुते बैलों की गरदन से गाड़ी का जुआ हटाया। बैलों को एक तरफ़ बाँधा , फिर गाड़ी में रखी तमाम लकड़ियाँ निकालकर आँगन में रख दीं। सेठ ने खुशी - खुशी पाँच रुपए दिए। चौधरी अपने बैलों को फिर से गाड़ी में जोतने लगा तो सेठ गरजकर बोला , ““ खबरदार , गाड़ी और बैलों को हाथ मत लगाना ! गाड़ी और बैलों की मैंने पूरी कीमत चुकाई है। अब ये मेरे हैं। मैंने तुझसे गाड़ी का मोल पूछा था या लकड़ियों का ? ज़रा याद कर , मैंने कहा ...
